Featured here are various photos featuring influential women in history for Black History Month and Women’s History Month. All of the photos were provided by the Art Director. I cropped each photo and created decorative illustrated assets adapting to TheSkimm’s brand guidelines and toolkit. These images were featured on TheSkimm’s Instagram stories during Black History Month and Women’s History Month.
Project Overview.
Objective: This assignment was designed to pay tribute to women who have made significant contributions to the world and highlight them during Black History Month and Women’s History Month.
Individual Contribution: The photographs were provided by the In-house Graphic Designer. I was responsible for cutting out the figures and utilizing brand illustration guidelines and color palettes to add illustrative elements to the images.
Influential women: Black history and Women’s History Month
Lucille Ball
Lucille Ball was a pioneer and influential woman in comedy. She was known for her leading comedic role as Lucy in the 1950’s television show, “I Love Lucy.”
Serena Williams
Serena Williams is an African-American woman who has positively impacted the African-American community advocating and serving as a role model for the African-American community. She has accomplished great achievements in tennis, showing that African-American can excel.
Gwendolyn Brooks
Gwendolyn Brooks was a poet and the first African American woman to win a Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Her poetry focuses on authentic candid realities of the Black Community and their everyday lives. Her poetry gave the African-American community a voice. She is considered a key figure in the Chicago Black Renaissance and the Black Arts Movement.
Hedy Lamarr
Hedy Lamarr was a key figure in the communications technology field. She was a pioneer for future female inventors and scientists. She invented and patented a secret communication system. This invention used frequency hopping to make radio torpedoes harder to jam. This technology influences the world today, it is utilized in cellphones, GPS, and Wi-Fi.
Elizabeth Magie Phillips
Elizabeth Magic Phillips was a Game Designer, Writer, and Feminist who invented the Landlord’s game which lead the way for what we know today as the board game Monopoly. The Landlord’s game educated players on the principle of Georgism, which is the notion that everyone should have equal access and benefits to land as it is a natural resource.
Melitta bentz
Melitta Bentz invented the paper coffee filter. This invention was influential to women’s history as she was the first woman in Germany to patent an invention. She was an entrepreneur creating a business that still runs today, advocating for a commitment to employee’s welfare offering benefits and paid vacations.
Ida B. Wells
Ida B. Wells was a pioneer journalist and activist advocating for the fight for racial justice during the Civil Rights Movement. As a journalist, she exposed the inhumanity and horror of lynching in the American South, giving voice and visibility to the injustices during this time. She also co-founded the NAACP which advocated for Woman’s Suffrage.
Ellen MalcoLM
Ellen Malcom is the founder, former president, and chair emerita of EMILY’s list. EMILY’s list brought together like minded pro-choice women in their political pursuits in running for a seat in elected offices. She is an influential and impactful woman in politics, organizing for Common Cause, creating America Coming Together, and empowering, educating progressing groups to register, inform themselves, and vote.
